Q: We’re shopping for mother-of-the-bride dresses right now and my mom seems to think that her dress and my fiance’s mom’s dress have to perfectly match. Our wedding isn’t going to be super formal and even my bridal party isn’t going to wear identical dresses. (They’re mixing and matching their necklines and dress colors.) Do you think that we really need perfectly coordinating mother of the bride/groom dresses? Or can we be a little more lenient?
A: You’re totally right on this one. While some couples like the matchy-matchy style and will ask their moms to choose MOB dresses and MOG dresses that look super similar, matchy-matchy mom dresses are NOT a must-do by any means. More couples than ever before are asking their moms to look for something that coordinates with the style and formality of the wedding day but not to worry too much about what the other mom is wearing. So long as your moms are choosing dresses that fall in line with your bridal style and formality, the dresses should look coordinated enough for your fun mismatched vibe. What’s most important is that your moms look and feel their best. So instead of mom stressing over whether her dress matches mother-of-the-groom’s dress, encourage her to think about herself first.
